Ford Madox Brown murals in the Great Hall are protected beneath bespoke aluminium and perspex cabinets , installed during the installation . Temperature and humidity probes measure the environment around each mural , and each is checked and monitored every day to ensure no damage occurs . A £330 Million refurbishment of Manchester Town Hall is underway . The Victorian neo-gothic monument , designed by Alfred Waterhouse , is being modernised to make it more accessible whilst extensive repairs and restorations are being made to the infrastructure and its contents , in line with the edifice's Grade 1 listed status .
