A disused pressure gauge , used as part of the infrastructure that transported coal from the Town Hall's basement to levels throughout the building . A £330 Million refurbishment of Manchester Town Hall is underway . The Victorian neo-gothic monument , designed by Alfred Waterhouse , is being modernised to make it more accessible whilst extensive repairs and restorations are being made to the infrastructure and its contents , in line with the edifice's Grade 1 listed status .
